This module is, literally, two complete devices in one, adding a third possibility: using it as an integrated Channel Strip .

Mode 1: Equalizer

By selecting "LINE"+"EQ ON", the module functions as a standalone line equalizer:

• The signal passes through an exact replica of the complete circuit of the iconic API 560 .
• It features the same electronically balanced input, 10 equalization bands , and 30mm sliding faders, without sacrificing functionality or the original feel .

Mode 2: Microphone Preamplifier

When the "MIC" mode is selected, the signal is directed to the preamp stage:

• The signal path includes a high-quality input transformer and two gain stages with discrete operational amplifiers .
• It provides up to 70 dB of gain , making it perfectly suited for demanding microphones such as ribbon mics .

Mode 3: Channel Strip

The real innovation comes when using both functions simultaneously ("MIC" + "EQ ON")

When the equalizer is activated while in "MIC" mode, the EQ section is inserted between the two amplification stages (a configuration similar to that of the Neve 1081).

• This allows you to sculpt the sound before saturation : unwanted frequencies can be cleaned up or pleasant ones accentuated.
• The sculpted sound reaches the output transformer, allowing the generation of a desired harmonic distortion using only the selected frequencies, providing an infinite number of colors and tonal character.

The magic of  Proportional Q

The 560 design uses Proportional Q (proportional bandwidth) technology:

• This design intuitively widens the bandwidth (wider Q) at minimum boost/cut settings and reduces it (narrower Q) at higher settings, without the need for additional controls.
• This feature minimizes the " phase shift " effect often present in other equalizer designs, maintaining signal integrity.
• The advantage of integrating ten bands of equalization directly into the preamp's signal path lies in its ability to offer exquisitely subtle tone control. This allows you to shape the preamp's frequency response , creating a virtually infinite palette of tonal colors. This contrasts with surgical equalization (which can be drastic and risky during instrument tracking ).
